What is BMI and what is a healthy BMI in Pakistan?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. The World Health Organization says people of South Asian origin have higher health risks at lower BMIs, so it suggests lower cut-offs for them: healthy is 18.5 to 22.9, overweight from 23, and obese from 27.5. The international ranges (healthy up to 24.9, obese from 30) are also available.
Questions
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². For 70 kg and 1.70 m: 70 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 24.2.
What is a normal BMI for women?
The same ranges apply to adult men and women. For children and teenagers, doctors use age-based charts instead.
