Make a favicon for your website
A favicon is the small icon in the browser tab, bookmarks and phone home screen. Make one from your logo, or from your initials on a coloured background, and download a complete pack: favicon.ico, 16, 32 and 48 px PNGs, the Apple touch icon, Android icons and the web manifest, plus the HTML to paste into your site. Nothing is uploaded.
How to add it to your site
- Unzip the pack and upload all the files to the main folder of your website (where index.html or index.php is).
- Paste the HTML into the <head> of your pages. On WordPress, use Appearance → Customize → Site Identity → Site Icon with the 512 px PNG instead.
- Refresh with Ctrl+F5. Browsers cache favicons, so it can take a while to show everywhere.
Questions
What size should my logo be?
At least 512 × 512 pixels and roughly square. Simple logos look best; small text disappears at 16 px.
Why doesn't my new favicon show?
Browsers keep old favicons for a long time. Open the site in a private window to check, or clear the browser cache.
